Watch John Oliver Deliver a Powerful Argument Against the Confederate Flag
On Sunday night, comedian John Oliver delivered a powerful argument against the Confederate flag. The flag is in the news after the fatal shooting of nine people at a historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina, last week. Dylann Roof, the 21-year-old white man charged in the shooting, was photographed proudly waving the Confederate flag. The flag flew at full-staff across much of the state—including at the state Capitol—even as the American and state flags were lowered to mark a period of mourning.
“The Confederate flag is one of those symbols that really should only be seen on T-shirts, belt buckles, and bumper stickers to help the rest of us identify the worst people in the world,” Oliver said. He went on to suggest the Confederate flag should not only be brought down to half-staff but that it should be removed completely and stored in a box labeled “bad flag.”
